First Responders & Military

Vulnerability sounds like truth & feels like courage.

Truth & courage aren’t always comfortable.

But they are never weakness.

- Brene Brown

Adam

(Federal Police Officer)

I look forward to working with Sylvie again the next time she returns to my area. Her work with me took me from sitting on the edge of my bed, holding a loaded handgun and searching for a reason not to shoot myself, to a genuine, legitimate desire to live each day to the fullest and to be on this earth as long as I possibly can. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Sylvie’s work with me saved my life and I will be forever thankful to her for that.

I was brought together with Sylvie through a previous client of hers because he saw how dark of a place I was in at the time.

I had undergone multiple personal traumas and losses, coupled with workplace stressors and my mental health had deteriorated to the point that I was regularly and actively considering suicide as an escape from the pain.

I have been a police officer for 13 years and improperly handled the traumas I experienced over that time. This was due to a multitude of factors, I was naive and thought i was tougher than any other police officer ever was. I was also never given the tools by my agency to deal properly with the experiences I had. I had lost multiple colleagues and friends to suicide and was finally able to identify and understand why they turned to that option for some relief.

My good friend had seen how depressed and dark a place I was in and suggested that Sylvie may be able to help. I was initially skeptical, as I had been prescribed antidepressants and even anti psychotic drugs, all to no avail. I had reserved myself to a life of depression and planned that once my children had grown up, I would then end my life. I did not see myself growing old with my wife of enjoying being a grandfather in the future.

I had two sessions with Sylvie via zoom prior to her being in my area. Both these sessions were very heavy as I recounted my past 15 years of trauma and experiences. Sylvie immediately had me at ease given her past history and the common ground we found we shared. She genuinely cared to hear my story. The preparations she gave me prior to the ceremony were detailed and she answered all my questions.

I went into our first session hopeful but with very low expectations. I didn’t think it would work for me. I felt completely relaxed, calm and overall safe throughout my entire session. There was no timeline, I felt like Sylvie was giving me all of her attention and care throughout the ceremony and even afterwards as we shared some food and just talked for a few hours.

Sylvie took great care to make sure I was capable and safe to drive home afterwards due to the long ceremony, late night and overall effect it had on my system, ensuring I messaged as soon as I got home to let her know I was safe.

Her follow up has been incredible, from the integration sessions following the ceremony, to simply a random text out of no where asking how I have been doing, she genuinely cares about those she helps.

Beginning in 2006 until my exit in 2020, my journey as a federal police officer in the RCMP consistently exposed me to trauma-rich environments and circumstances and then often left me with no sustainable resources for true healing.

I worked in starkly diverse facets of the organization, first in general duty policing, and then later in my career as an undercover operator, a human source developer and handler, and as a physical surveillance specialist. This varied and unique skill set lead me to multiple overseas military secondments to the Canadian Special Forces in West Africa on National Security related endeavours. Working alongside International Military and Law Enforcement Agencies, at highest levels of government, opened my world scope to a different level of awareness that was egregiously out of alignment with my moral and value system. This internalized pressure ushered in a phase of awakening and a pursuit of healing from moral injury and systemic deception. I made a choice to leave behind a successful career and become a warrior in service to deeper truth.

After 13 years in traditional psychology and its limitations, I was no less ready to leave this life, and even my family because I could no longer endure the pain, the anger and the frustration of never finding any reprieve. I could never exhale.

Then I took a brave leap of faith, one that could have lost me my career. I decided to take my first journey with psychedelic therapy. What happened then was an enormous un-callousing of my heart, a de-armouring of everything I was trying to protect myself from, and along this deep healing journey with its layers and layers of expansion, the rest is her-story.

First Responders are on the front lines responding to human trauma - often risking their own lives in the process or carrying other lives in their hands.  The responsibilities inherent in these positions leave little room for error and require a discipline of mind and body that - over time and with compounded experiences of traumatic exposure - can lock the nervous system into place.

The burdens First Responders carry often must be repressed into the unconscious for the sake of service.  Over time, this can result in numbness, fatigue, depression, a loss of physical health & vitality through maladaptive coping mechanisms, and a disassociation from the passion you originally felt for your life & life’s work (including more severe psychological symptoms from traumatic exposure).

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies, Intentional Breathwork and Somatic experiences and other healing modalities, offered at InTemana allow you to release unconscious burdens, soothe & de-armor your nervous system, and come back into your body where your Source of Vitality lies.
